Why Phase One Orthodontic Treatment Matters for Your Child’s Smile
When most parents think about orthodontics, they picture braces during the teenage years. While many children do begin treatment later, starting earlier can make a meaningful difference in how a child’s teeth, bite, and jaw develop.
At Happy Braces Orthodontics, we view phase one orthodontic treatment as a proactive way to guide growth while a child is still developing. In many cases, it is not about creating a perfectly straight smile right away. It is about helping the jaws grow in a healthier direction, creating space for permanent teeth, improving bite function, and giving children more confidence as they grow.
What is phase one orthodontic treatment?
Phase one orthodontic treatment is early care that usually happens while a child still has a mix of baby and permanent teeth. Rather than straightening every tooth, it focuses on building a better foundation for the future smile. That may mean correcting a crossbite, guiding jaw growth, creating room for permanent teeth, or helping the upper and lower jaws fit together more comfortably.
Dr. Santos and Dr. Yousefi may recommend phase one treatment when early intervention can redirect growth in a healthier direction. Every child is different, which is why an early evaluation is so valuable. Sometimes treatment is needed right away. Sometimes we simply monitor growth and wait for the right time.
When should my child have their first orthodontic consultation?
The first orthodontic consultation is commonly recommended around age seven. By this point, many children have their first permanent molars and front teeth coming in, giving us a helpful view of how the bite is developing.
This does not mean every seven-year-old needs treatment. Many children come in for an evaluation and we simply recommend monitoring their growth over time. But evaluating the mouth during this mixed dentition stage allows us to spot early signs of crowding, crossbite, jaw growth concerns, or bite issues that may benefit from early attention.
Signs your child may benefit from phase one treatment
These signs do not always mean treatment is required, but they do tell us a closer look is important.
Crossbite in the front or back teeth. A crossbite happens when the upper and lower teeth do not fit together properly. The upper teeth may sit behind the lower teeth instead of slightly in front of them. Over time, this can cause the jaw to shift to one side, leading to uneven growth, tooth wear, and gum concerns. Correcting a crossbite early can guide the teeth and jaws into a healthier relationship.
Bite issues that affect the gums or tooth position. Some bites place pressure where they should not. Teeth may bite into the gums, create irritation, or lock into positions that limit how the jaw moves. Early treatment can help protect the teeth and gums before these issues worsen.
Skeletal growth concerns. Some children have differences in how the upper and lower jaws are growing. The upper jaw may be too narrow, or the jaws may not be developing in balance with each other. Because children are still growing, phase one treatment can help redirect jaw development in a better direction.
Severe crowding. When there is not enough room for teeth to come in properly, permanent teeth may erupt rotated, blocked, or out of position. Severe crowding can also affect a child’s confidence. Phase one treatment can sometimes create space and improve the way the smile develops.
How phase one treatment helps guide jaw growth
One of the biggest goals of phase one treatment is to support better jaw balance and function while growth is still active. Depending on your child’s needs, treatment may help widen the upper jaw, improve the relationship between the upper and lower teeth, or create more room for permanent teeth to erupt healthily.
Guiding growth at the right time can make a meaningful difference and may reduce the complexity of any treatment needed later. At Happy Braces, we take time to explain what we see, why it matters, and what treatment may accomplish so parents can feel confident in their decisions.
Can phase one treatment reduce the need for phase two?
Many parents ask whether early treatment means their child will not need braces or aligners later. The honest answer is: it depends.
Some children will still need phase two treatment once more permanent teeth come in, typically focused on fine-tuning alignment and bite details during the teen years. However, phase one treatment may make that later treatment shorter or less complex. In some cases, when early treatment successfully improves jaw shape, bite function, and tooth eruption, a child may not need phase two at all.
We never want to overpromise, because every child’s growth is different. But when early treatment is recommended for the right reasons, it can absolutely improve future outcomes.
Confidence and functional benefits for your child
Orthodontic treatment is not only about teeth. For many children, their smile plays a role in how they feel around friends, at school, and in everyday life. When a child has noticeable crowding, a bite issue, or jaw imbalance, they may quietly feel self-conscious about smiling or speaking freely. Phase one treatment can support both oral development and emotional confidence. We often see that when children feel better about their smile, they engage more comfortably in social settings.
Parents may also notice practical improvements during or after treatment. Depending on the issue, children may experience better chewing, clearer speech, or a more comfortable bite. These improvements can make a real difference in a child’s daily comfort and quality of life.
What to expect during a phase one consultation
A phase one consultation is designed to be informative, comfortable, and low-pressure. We will look at how the teeth are coming in, how the upper and lower jaws fit together, whether crowding or crossbite is present, and whether any bite issue is affecting the gums or tooth position.
Education is a big part of what we do. We want parents to understand exactly why we are making any recommendation. We also want families to feel comfortable asking questions, because informed parents make better decisions for their children.
Our team understands that younger patients may need extra encouragement and simple explanations. We work to create an environment that feels approachable and take the time to help children feel comfortable throughout the process.
